Passable Adventures: Behind the Scenes

Passable Adventures had a single goal from the outset: a project that I was capable of finishing in a timely manner. While the second part of that goal is completely out the window, it's the first that's most important. As an achievable project, Passable Adventures didn't have a lot of scripting or planning but there was some and it occasionally yielded surprising results.

This is the first post of bonus content for Passable Adventures. I have some more sketches and notes, but I can't seem to find them just now. When they resurface, you all will be the first to know.

An early look at gridface, and trying to work out the effect of lines intersecting the face. Also, SATAN CAT.

After I completed No.3 and started work on No.4 I quickly blocked out the rest of the story. I was worried that I would forget to introduce elements like the clock that would be important later.

A couple of cracks at posing for No.7. I especially like the progression of expressions that I got in this sketch. I don't really think they came through in the final version. Especially panels 3 and 6.

It took quite a few times to get the progression of this strip and the look of the dream/god pyramid worked out. Unfortunately, I did tons of sketches for this strip but waited a month before I drew it. I think the quality suffered as a result.

The left page is me struggling to remember how to draw the hawknose man. I had it down when I was pumping out the strips regularly, but kind of lost the knack.

The opposite page is both additional blocking for the final strip as well as trying different hatching patterns for the background and the underside of the pyramid. Claire was a big help in this process and I think the strip wouldn't have come out as well as it did if she hadn't been involved.

A few more hatching options for the pyramid base on the left, and on the right my celebratory doodles. These were done in honor of completing PA and the arrival of my Buddha Machine II.
